Playful pins – 10AM - 1PM

Let’s make some playful pins! You know the kind… “flare”! Get creative with cutting out different shapes from sheet metal, embellishing with more cut out pieces, work with wire, stamps, textures and more. Learn to use a jeweler’s saw, drill holes, solder, shape and work-harden a pin backing as you work with sterling silver, brass, copper, and/or bronze. After this 2-session class, leave with at least one fun pin that you can stick onto your favorite denim jacket, backpack or sweater, show off to friends or as a holiday gift to a special someone.

This continuation of our Beginning Metalsmithing 1 course will teach you more metalworking techniques and boost your confidence in the skills you’ve already been practicing. Learn to securely bezel set a cabochon stone, adding unique expression to your jewelry or metal art. Create texture with the rolling mill, steel stamps, and other mark making techniques on copper, brass, and sterling silver is covered. Add more detail to pieces with ferric etching processes. Continue honing your skills with the soldering torches, and practice “cleaning up” your pieces by filing, sanding, and building on your knowledge of useful tools for the flex shaft. Come away from class with beautiful, wearable jewelry, and the skills and knowledge to continue designing and making more!
Beginning Metals 1 - 6 - 9PM

This hands-on class covers the foundational techniques of metalsmithing. Learn to use hand tools such as a jeweler’s saw to pierce shapes from sheet metal while using these components to create jewelry or other metal art. We will thoroughly cover the use of torches and silver solder to fabricate jewelry such as rings, pendants for necklaces, and earrings. Building up your “torch confidence” by soldering metals like silver, copper, and brass will bring a new dimension to your work! Focus will also be on metal finishing techniques from filing and sanding to simple patinas and flex shaft polishing. Come away from class with beautiful, wearable jewelry, and the skills and knowledge to continue designing and making more!
